Center for Reproductive Medicine and Infertility, Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Cell Biology and Anatomy, Box 30, Cornell University Medical College 1300 York Avenue, New York, NY 10021, USA
Several separate events of the fertilization sequence (sperm capacitation, regulated sperm transport in the oviduct, sperm-cumulus interaction, sperm-zona binding, the a reaction, zona penetration, gamete fusion) represent points at which conception might be preventable. Each is considared variously with reference to its biological significance, what is known about the mechanisms involved, the issues that remain to be resolved, and the praspects for specific inhibition.
Key words: acrosorne reaction/capacitation/contraception/cumulus oophorus/fertilization/gamete fusion/sperm transport
