David H. Barlow and Lynn R. Fraser

Editor-in-Chief Chairman, ESHRE (1999–2001)

It has come to our attention that the following article `Progesterone as a neuroactive neurosteroid, with special reference to the effect of progesterone on myelination' by E.E.Baulieu and M.Schumacher, Hum. Reprod ., 15 (Suppl. 1), pp. 1–13, 2000 has been published in identical version (except for reference and subheading formats) in Steroids, 65, pp. 605–612, 2000 and in highly similar versions (except for two out of six figures, co-author order and minor text changes in Conclusions) in Multiple Sclerosis, 3, pp. 105–112, 1997 and in Ciba Foundation Symposium, 191, 90–106, 1995.

We wish to apologise to the readers for this serious breach in our standards of ethical publication.
