About the Cover
Cover design The cover of Human Reproduction shows meiotic stages by use of a novel immunocytochemical technique in microspread oocytes from cultured fetal ovaries. Cells were labelled with antisera A1 (anti-lateral element, specific to synaptonemal complex, white) and GS (centromeres, red). Top: zygotene nucleus in which synapsis is underway. Centre: Pachytene nucleus with a full complement of synaptonemal complexes. Note the presence of a bivalent with two centromeres separated by a short region of synaptonemal complex (green arrow). Bottom: Diplotene nucleus containing regions of both interstitial (green arrows) and terminal (yellow arrows) desynapsis. This technique not only suggests that fetal oocytes survive in culture but may provide a valuable tool in future for investigation of meiotic controls in developing oocytes. For further details, see pp. 172-182.
